To say thanks to everyone who joined me on the Elmhurst Early Bird so I was not biking alone, and to everyone who encouraged me and made me feel welcome and/or pulled me along on the Blue Skies Rides, I wanted to say thanks and have some fellowship off the bike. Please join me at my house for a Happy Hour. I will have a few appetizers, desserts, and drinks. Feel free to bring your favorite beverage or something else to share, but not required. Come join Pussanee and me for a ride along Des Plaines River Trail and Greenway. Not a good ride if you have time restraints or want to get from point A to point B the fastest way possible way. We will start at Gowe Park in Gurnee and ride South on the DPRT to The North Shore Trail East then do a loop of Middle fork Savanna Forest Preserve Greenway Trail back to the NST and to The Other Door Taqueria in Lake Bluff, we will get our food and the walk over to Lake Bluff Brewing Company to eat and as always Pussanee and I will buy a beer or soft drink for riders. Trail is hard pack gravel and paved and any bike will work. We will be our road tandem. Electric bikes are most welcome. Bring lots of water. Parking is somewhat limited so please arrive early. We will be back by 3pm, unless we‘re not. Please register as it is a remote start.

Day 1: Passau – Overnight dock
Afternoon check in, afterwards Merlijn will set sail. We’ll present you with a welcome drink and introduce the crew. We will also provide information on the tour, the ship, and hold a safety briefing. After departing from Passau, where the Inn, Ilz and Danube meet and merge, your bike and barge cruise will really begin. While you settle in the lounge or on the outside terrace with a drink, Captain will steer Merlijn through the first lock, and you can sit back and let the Blue Danube amaze you! A meal will be served during the cruise, and in the evening there will be time for an after-dinner stroll ashore.

Day 2: Overnight dock – Deggendorf - Straubing. Bike tour: 35-40 km
After breakfast and a bike introduction, your cycle tour to Deggendorf will start. The tour will lead you along the popular classic ‘Donau Radweg’ (Danube cycle route) via Niederalteich, home to one of the oldest Benedictine monasteries in Bavaria to Deggendorf also known as the gateway to the Bavarian Forest. Where Merlijn awaits you for a beautiful afternoon cruise along the most scenic stretch of the ‘blue’ Danube. We’ll cruise along Bogen, located at the foot of the steep Bogen mountain. Next up is Pfelling, a small village, but one with nautical significance, as it registers the water level in this shallow section of the Danube. Dinner will be served during the cruise, afterwards we’ll arrive in Straubing and stay overnight.

Day 3: Straubing – Regensburg. Bike tour: 30-35 km or extend to 50-55 km
This morning you can explore the city a bit more. Straubing is a ducal city, has Celtic and Roman roots, and is known for its unmistakeable green spired tower in the city centre, its picturesque town square, the baroque town houses, and the Graubünden Museum, which is worth a visit. Or you get on the paddles directly after breakfast and cycle an extra loop!
We’ll meet up again and start the cycle tour along the magnificent Danube. Afternoon you’ll board Merlijn, your home for the tour, and cruise to Regensburg.

Day 4: Regensburg. Bike tour: 20-25 km
Merlijn stays in port today, giving you the opportunity to enjoy Regensburg to the fullest. It is a fascinatingly well-preserved mediaeval town. Highlights include the cathedral dating back to the 8th century, the collegiate church and the stone imperial bridge. You have many options; cycling, culture, relaxing, all possible. We will organise a guided bike tour with an interesting pit stop at the ‘Walhalla’ near Donaustauf, which King Ludwig I had built as a temple to honour notable Germans. We also arrange a local guide to show you the city of Regensburg.

Day 5: Regensburg – Kelheim – Riedenburg. Bike tour: 45-50 km or extend to 55-60 km
This morning, you leave the bustling German town by bike to cycle through ‘the Winzer vineyards’. On the way, you can visit Bad Abbach, popular for its sulphur and mud baths. Before arriving at the city of Kelheim where the Navigable Danube ends and the Rhine–Main–Danube canal starts, the Danube bike route connects to the Altmühl bike route, which we will follow further.
After a visit to Kelheim, you’ll cross the bridge over the lock of Kelheim, where the next section is dammed and looks like a lake. After the lake, you will mainly follow the towpath along the canal. As we draw closer to Essing, its unique wooden bridge will come into view. Measuring 193 metres in length, this technical wonder and work of art is the longest wooden bridge in Europe. The Merlijn will await you at a dock. If you haven‘t clocked up enough miles, you can continue cycling on, or cruise to today’s destination Riedenburg, where we stay overnight.
In this stunning medieval town, you might want to visit the St. John Baptist Church or the Church of Our Lady, which may look like a proper Baroque church today, but is a medieval one at heart, dating back to the 12th century.

Day 6: Riedenburg – Roth. Bike tour: 50-60 km
Today’s bike tour will lead you along the Main-Donau canal. The bike rides will mostly be on gravel cycle paths, as you will see many others along this canal. Passing by the village of Beilngries, after a short break, you carry on through the Altmühl valley to Plankstetten, where the iconic Benedictine monastery on the edge of the forest, founded in 1129, dominates the surroundings.
After a coffee stop at a traditional German bakery, you will continue cycling to your last cycle destination Roth, where you’ll board the Merlijn.
Some parts of these days bike tours will lead along the abandoned old Ludwig-Donau-Main Canal, which at one time linked the Rhine with the Danube at Kelheim. The canal was named after King Ludwig I of Bavaria, and built between 1836 and 1846. Construction of the roughly parallel but much larger Rhine–Main–Danube Canal that we know today was started in 1921, but wasn’t completed until 1992.

Day 7: Roth – Nürnberg – overnight dock. Bike tour: 30-35 km
The tour for today goes along Stadeln and Fürth and is not too long, leaving you enough time to visit the historical centre of Nürnberg. Learn more about this historical, but also lively German university city. Don’t forget to try a ‘Currywurst mit Brötchen’: a type of fine German pork sausage typically steamed and seasoned with curry ketchup! After your visit, you cycle on to the dock where Merlijn awaits you. Afternoon we cruise, passing one of the highest locks of the Main-Donau canal.

Day 8: Overnight dock – Bamberg. Bike tour: 50-55 km
Today’s tour will lead you through the fields of the ‘Regnitz valley’, which, from south to north, connects the cities of Nürnberg, Fürth, Erlangen and Forchheim, with its half-timber houses and its old guard house. The roads are well paved as it is an official ‘Radweg’ (cycle route). Enjoy the wonderful natural surroundings on one of Germany’s most beautiful bike route!
Your last cycling day ends in Bamberg, a very charming, historic bishops’ town, and home to Villa Concordia, the historic lock 100, water castle, baroque house on the bridge, and the former fishing settlement of Klein Venedig (Little Venice) - all emphasizing the close connection between town and river.
Merlijn will be docked at a fair distance from the city centre, after your visit you’ll ride your bike to the ship. A farewell dinner will be served onboard and we’ll stay overnight in port.

From Wageningen our first cycling tour of the week takes us through the lovely valley of the Lower Rhine river, and then on through the Veluwe, a large area of woods and heathlands. At the end of the day we pedal to Arnhem, via suburbs and past the lovely parks named Sonsbeek and Zijpendaal. Today‘s ride ends in Arnhem. During World War II, Arnhem was the battle scene of Operation Market Garden, the largest airborne operation in history. It ended in a failure, as the inability to capture a bridge over the Rhine River resulted in the destruction of the British 1st Airborne Division.

This morning the barge takes us to Doesburg where we start our ride. There are two cycling options to get us to Zutphen and Deventer. Both options first go to Bronkhorst, a seeming hamlet that’s proud to be the smallest town in Holland. From Bronkhorst, the shorter option takes us by ferry to the western bank of the IJssel river, whereas the longer option stays on the eastern bank. Both options lead us through the countryside to Zutphen. The tour ends in Deventer, a city known for its delicious spicy gingerbread.

As we have breakfast the barge takes us to Wijhe to begin our ride. In the morning we will enjoy a nice bicycle ride to Hattem. We can choose a short option along the banks of the river or opt for a longer ride across the east Veluwe area. Hattem has a rich history, which is still clearly visible today. Leaving Hattem, it is only a short ride to the city of Zwolle, one of the most beautiful Hanseatic cities. From Zwolle we continue to Kampen.

Today we leave from Kampen, our cycling tour leads along the Border Lakes to the fishing harbor of Elburg. Here, swimming, boating, surfing and fishing are favorite summertime activities. From Elburg the cycling tour continues through the woods and moorlands of the Veluwe to lovely Harderwijk, where the night will be spent in its old fishing harbor. In the 1500s Harderwijk boasted the largest fish market in the Zuiderzee region

Our last day we ride from Huizen to the beautiful fortress towns of Naarden and Muiden. The latter is famous for its historic castle on the waterfront. From Muiden we will cycle along quiet roads to your final destination, the world famous city of Amsterdam.

I always get a kick out of riding up and down Chicago’s Lake Shore Drive with the beautiful views of Lake Michigan - with no cars! The complete course is 30 miles. If I’m able get started early, I will try to do two loops for 60 miles. Last year 16 members of EBC rode Lake Shore Drive!

The DCC is one of the most beautiful invitational rides in the midwest crisscrossing the Door County peninsula and featuring spectacular views of Green Bay and Lake Michigan. A half-century ride through Chicago and near north suburbs to the original Hackney’s location on Harms Road in Glenview. The route features a mix of neighborhoods, city streets, and paved trails. One stop each way in addition to lunch. Hackney’s is a north suburb institution. This is the original location opened in 1939, featuring great food and outdoor dining next to Harms Woods along the North Branch Bike Trail. Entrees range from $15 to $20. Expect to be back in Elmhurst around 3:30 PM. I will stick with the advertised 14-16 MPH pace. This is a conversation-paced ride, not a fast ride!
I will publish the route in the week before the ride. This year, I expect I will take my original route back into Elmhurst along North Avenue. Check back a few days before the ride for more details.

We are approaching the end of summer and no better way to celebrate a
great season of riding and hiking then with a PICNIC! It will be held at Madison Meadows Shelter, a great starting place for many rides of all levels. BBQ from Uncle Bub‘s, offering pulled pork, cornbread, and side favorites. Vegetarian options available as well. EBC members are encouraged to bring a dish to complement the main meal or a desert. For those who may not be riding that day, there are options to play a game of Cornhole, or take a leisure hike around the huge Madison Meadows Park. We have the shelter from 10am till dusk, so let‘s take advantage of the space. Please RSVP to ensure enough BBQ is ordered. Come join our highly-social, evening, trail ride that has been a Spring, Summer and Fall tradition since August, 2015, always rolling at the speed-of-fun. :-)
We ride as a team and enthusiastically encourage communication, conversation and laughter - as long as riders prescribe to safe practices such as: communicating about obstacles and maintaining gaps that are appropriate for the speed, terrain and weather conditions.
Your bike must have a headlight and tail light. Avoid using retina-burning, overly-bright and strobing lights since we ride trails as a pack and are usually separated from car and truck traffic. We courteously move to the right and try to douse headlights when passing pedestrians and fellow riders as we ride into growing darkness.
History has shown that this ride can be done with most any kind of bike, but sometimes conditions can make it tough for very narrow tires. You be the judge.
No rider will ever be left behind. We have several bona fide EBC Ride Leaders attending this ride for extra safety. ...But you must make sure that your bike is ready and you are in athletic condition for this distance and pace. Note that 10-12 mph on a trail may take the same effort as 13-16 mph on a road; ...and riding a heavy, fat or mountain bike requires yet additional effort. E-bikes are welcome.

We will introduce an awesome new venue in Hokah Minnesota, a rustic farm nestled in a scenic coulee. While the ride is about riding with other rad people like yourself, rest assured a portion of your entry fee will go to a local entity that could use a little financial help. If we can have a super fun time while helping others, that is what will make this a successful event. We will also be using local businesses to feed and hydrate us. Hokah is a super cool little town, and we would love to help keep our money local.
All routes will leave and finish at the farm. The gravel is approximately two miles from the start line, and one mile of that is a paved climb, once you are on the ridge, the dust shall start flying! All routes will descend this paved section upon return to the finish line."
