Join me for our regularly scheduled Friday road ride from Lombard to St. Charles. Our midpoint rest stop will be at Panera in St. Charles. I expect to maintain the upper end of the posted rolling speed, with optional sprints, and ride the Munger Loop (51 miles), but feel free to do a half loop (47 miles), or head into Panera at your option (43 miles). We will face some hills, rollers, and open road with narrow shoulders, so a road bike and some road riding experience is highly recommended. Ample regroup opportunities. No one will be dropped. Consider joining me for trail ride to Elgin. We will ride compacted limestone scree rail to trail trails of Illinois Prairie Path and Great Western trails. There is a stretch of paved trail of few miles. We will take a break at a sandwich place, Jimmy John’s in Elgin. Any type of bike with at least 28mm tire will do. I will be on my mountain bike, so our pace will be closer to 12 mph.

Cap Sauers is the largest road-less tract of land in Cook County. One of the trails we will walk is Visitation Esker and it runs along the top of the Ridgeline which slopes down 50 feet on each side. The Esker Trail and Cap Sauers are Cook County gems and have been written about many times in hiking Publications. It is truly a beautiful remote area to Hike right here at Home. Twisting through the beautiful, wooded bluffs, ravines, wetlands and prairies is what makes Cap Sauers a great escape into nature. Visitation Esker is one of the best-defined examples of this glacial feature in the State. Eskers are narrow, long, winding hills that were deposited by streams underneath the glaciers and were formed by glacial meltwater. This esker—a ridge that was formed by a river that once ran in or on a glacier here at Cap Sauers Holdings. The beauty does not end with the Esker though; we will continue unmarked trails through the glorious woods of Cap Sauers. This area is remote with few people unlike Palos and The Swallow Cliff Stair area which can be packed. The Land Manager made a choice not to have any info centers or even trail signs on the narrow footpaths that wind through the prairies, savannahs, sedge meadows, wetlands, stunning old growth Oak forests and even cattail marshes. Please note that this is a quiet hike and everyone should use their soft voices and try to limit conversation to the flora and fauna we are passing through. Pace will be moderate to enjoy the healing forest. Long pants, and long sleeve shirts are required as well as bug spray and head net if you have one. I will send an email with my Silent Sports Article on the magic of silence in quiet places as well as some great written pieces on the area. Meet at the start and carpool 2 minutes to a somewhat hidden but legal entrance that has just enough room for a couple of cars. Please register.

Join me for a brisk(not fast) ride around the western suburbs. Ride will include one brief rest stop, most likely going into the wind to start and have an average speed around 17 mph. Ride is canceled if it is raining at the start and NO e-bikes are allowed on this ride.

We will ride NW to Roselle and Bloomingdale. Plenty of long open roads. Some busy streets, but this is ride is on a Sunday, so should be little traffic. The Grundy County Corn Fest Parade via I & M Trail. Come and join George and Pussanee on a leisurely ride down the I & M Canal Trail to The Grundy County Corn Fest Parade. This is a great event, with tons of good food, a great parade down main street and great buttered Sweet Corn! We plan to arrive in Morris around 12:30pm and stay for about 2.5 hours to eat and watch the Parade. Trail is crushed limestone so Cross, Hybrid, Mountain, or road bike works. Electric Bikes most welcome. We will take a very short detour on the way out to visit the Historical Burial Site of the legendary Ottawa Indian Shabbona who became the Chief of the Potawatomi Nation. This is a very interesting Cemetery, and we will allow a bit of time there. Bring a decent cable and lock. Also handy are walking shoes. Take I 55 S to Exit 248 towards Joliet/Morris, go right on U.S.6 west (Eames St) to S. Center St., left on Center St. which turns into Bridge Street, go past Canal St. and over the DuPage River to Trail Parking on your left. Please register.

Come join our highly-social, evening, trail ride that has been a Spring, Summer and Fall tradition since August, 2015, always rolling at the speed-of-fun. :-) We ride as a team and enthusiastically encourage communication, conversation and laughter - as long as riders prescribe to safe practices such as: communicating about obstacles and maintaining gaps that are appropriate for the speed, terrain and weather conditions. Your bike must have a headlight and tail light. Avoid using retina-burning, overly-bright and strobing lights since we ride trails as a pack and are usually separated from car and truck traffic. We courteously move to the right and try to douse headlights when passing pedestrians and fellow riders as we ride into growing darkness. History has shown that this ride can be done with most any kind of bike, but sometimes conditions can make it tough for very narrow tires. You be the judge. No rider will ever be left behind. We have several bona fide EBC Ride Leaders attending this ride for extra safety. ...But you must make sure that your bike is ready and you are in athletic condition for this distance and pace. Note that 10-12 mph on a trail may take the same effort as 13-16 mph on a road; ...and riding a heavy, fat or mountain bike requires yet additional effort. E-bikes are welcome. A half-century ride through Chicago and near north suburbs to the original Hackney’s location on Harms Road in Glenview. The route features a mix of neighborhoods, city streets, and paved trails. One stop each way in addition to lunch. Hackney’s is a north suburb institution. This is the original location opened in 1939, featuring great food and outdoor dining next to Harms Woods along the North Branch Bike Trail. Entrees range from $15 to $20. Expect to be back in Elmhurst around 3:30 PM. I will stick with the advertised 14-16 MPH pace. This is a conversation-paced ride, not a fast ride! I will publish the route in the week before the ride. This year, I expect I will take my original route back into Elmhurst along North Avenue. Check back a few days before the ride for more details.
