Club Accomplishments in 2009

Great Western Trail Clean Up
For several years the Club has cleaned a section of the Great Western Trail in an area that has not typically been attached to a town or group. This has serviced a critical portion of the trail for the County.

Safety-Town Family Bike-a-thon
Each Spring the Elmhurst Park District hosts this event at Safety Town, located near the old train depot on the Prairie Path and York Road. The focus is on safe biking. In addition to talking to families about areas and trails to bike, the Club has passed out membership literature and safe biking information.

Bike to Work Week
Every Spring, in coordination with the Active Transportation Alliance and the DuPage County Trail Development, the Club has rallied at the Elmhurst and other city Metra stations to encourage people to bike to their local Metra station rather than drive a car. "Goodie" bags are distributed to those demonstrating that they have biked in and the bag includes a t-shirt, Clif bars and a coupon for a free cup of coffee.

Elmhurst Green Fest
The second annual Green Fest was held in Elmhurst's Wilder Park to bring environmentally friendly vendors and products to the community. The Club hosted a membership and bike safety information table that was well attended over the 5 hour time of the Fest. In addition Club members were available to lead rides on the proposed Shared Roads routes through Elmhurst.

Bike Advocacy in Elmhurst
The initial bike advocacy seed planted with the Club has taken root and has pretty much passed the baton to the Elmhurst Bike Task Force. Nearly 50% of the Task Force resident volunteers are also Club members.

Strengthened the Club’s ties
The Club continues to be a major contributor to the community through volunteer service. In addition to being an affiliate of the Park District, the Club remains a member of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce.

Shop-by-Bike Exhibits at Elmhurst Farmers Market
The York Vallette Business Association, sponsor of the Elmhurst Farmers Market, offered a free exhibit booth to the Club to promote biking and to show Market patrons how they can do they shopping around town by bike. The table was set up once a month during June through August. Residents were very interested in the idea and a lot of Club literature was distributed to the community.
